Genetic toolbox
Article Abstract:
The Human Genome Project is going forward with data catalogued on such databases as GenBank. It now has data for more than 141 mil base pairs. Ways to take advantage of the data are needed. Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, among them Harold "Skip" Garner, are trying to fill the gap and to make research available around the world. Garner and colleagues have designed a suite of programs called the Polymorphic Marker Predictions of Ubiquitous Simple Sequences (POMPOUS). The Garner laboratory home page at http://pompous.swmed.edu gives access to this and other software tools and information on available biochips.

Aplastic anemia in a petrochemical factory worker
Article Abstract:
The relationship to benzene exposure and aplastic anemia is examined, focusing on the 21-year experience of a petrochemical worker who worked closely with powder resin and lime and was thus exposed to low-level benzene. Topics include causes of aplastic anemia, possible carcinogenic effects of benzene, and societal concerns about benzene levels.

The shape of hemes to come
Article Abstract:
The article examines research on the shape and function of a protein functional group called hemes. Analysis has indicated that hemes are not flat, as was once believed, but have different shapes for different functions, and continued research may illuminate how hemes-based enzymes break down environmental pollutants.
