Get ahead, get a nurse
Article Abstract:
African and Asian women caring for disabled or sick family members can undertake a course in practical caring skills in Glasgow, Scotland. The 15-week course is taught by nurses and the resultant qualification could help employment prospects. The first course participants had expected to be offered employment in a new multicultural respite care unit in Glasgow, but the centre was closed due to insuffucient funding. The course was initially set up by the West of Scotland Community Relations Council (CRC) to train the women to work in the centre and the CRC claims to feel betrayed by the closure.

Helping the grieving process: a nurse's story
Article Abstract:
A nurse describes her experience of supporting a mother through the illness and death of her daughter due to AIDS. The woman began the grieving process on learning the diagnosis. She was fortunate to have the support of friends and family, a factor which may be absent for some people when the terminal illness is AIDS. However, two previous bad experiences of bereavement created some problems. The mother's ability to fulfill her daughter's wishes that she should hold her as death grew close was one of the factors which was helpful to the grieving process.
