Getting to trips with research evidence: Good quality research evidence is a prerequisite for introducing evidence-based health care
Article Abstract:
Research is shown to be important in determining effective forms of nursing care. Good quality research evidence will depend on the research question, and reliable evidence comes from experimental studies, particularly randomised controlled trials. Research reviews are able to reduce unmanageable amounts of information to more useful synopses, but systematic reviews are major undertakings. The NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD) disseminates in-house and commissioned systematic reviews, and identifies good quality, non-Cochrane systematic reviews.

Taking research and development forward
Article Abstract:
The organisation and funding of research and development (R&D) in the UK National Health Service changed following recommendations made in the 1994 Culyer report. The new arrangements provide more opportunities for nurses to become involved in R&D. Approximately half of the 409 million pounds sterling research and development levy for 1997-98 will be allocated to North Thames region to support a range of work. The region is keen to ensure that nurses are involved in setting the research agenda, in performing the research, and in implementing results.
