Getting tough on safety
Article Abstract:
There has been a steady fall in the number of work related accidents and deaths over the last 10 years. However the number of deaths from occupational disease is estimated at 8,000-20,000 a year, amounting to some 14,000 deaths at work or from disease in 1995. Michael Meacher, shadow employment secretary, believes that death or major injury at work is a grave matter, with severe punishment if negligence is proven. The CDM Regulations have gone some way towards progress in pinpointing responsibility in the construction industry.

BSE: existing guidance and future plans
Article Abstract:
The guidance on bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) issued to employees in various occupational groups is being reviewed by the Spongiform Encephalopathy Advisory Committee (SEAC) and the Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens (ACDP). It is still uncertain about a link between BSE and human disease and the risks to those exposed to the agent of BSE through their occupations, according to the ACDP.
