Give 'em a brake!
Article Abstract:
Safety analysts view the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act signed by George Bush in Dec 1991 as a factor in the potential increase of deaths and injuries from work-zone collisions. Office of Highway Safety Dir Clarke Bennett and Institute of Traffic Engineers Executive Dir Thomas Brahms both believe that cooperative planning between government and private contractors and use of high technology are needed to develop safety standards and equipment to protect workers and the public from work-zone collisions.

Put the brakes on police-pursuit hazards
Article Abstract:
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 919 people were killed from 1989 to 1991 in collisions during police pursuits. Although police officers do not agree with a total ban on pursuits, they believe that a clear policy must be developed that would reduce the risks of injury or death during such events. The proposed policy should include conditions when and where pursuits may occur and when or where a chase should never occur. Moreover, driving and police behavior training should be instituted.

Warning: work still ahead on work-zone safety
Article Abstract:
Majority of motorists tend to ignore the hazards posed by work-zone sites. Despite warning signs and flaggers, many motorists simply try to pass through work-zones without caution, thus resulting in senseless accidents. Another big factor in work-zone accidents is the lack of training for flaggers. The best solution to this problem is an aggressive education campaign to inform motorists about the inherent dangers of work-zones.
