Dr. Nelson, in her books "Strong Women Stay Young" and "Strong Women Stay Slim," cowritten with Sarah Wernnick, Ph.D., advises that strength training is the way to weight maintenance. Women lose one-third of a pound of muscle every year after they are past thirty, while gaining one-third pound or more. This causes a decrease in metabolism. Because appetite does not necessary drop, the subsequent imbalance causes a gain of about 5 to 10 pounds a year.
