Medical professionals scored an unprecedented number of legislative victories in 1996. The passage of the Kennedy-Kassenbaum bill, one of the more celebrated victories of 1996, will establish medical savings accounts as a health care financing option and improve patient access to healthcare. Additional legislative accomplishments include antitrust relief, mental health parity, the removal of gag clauses from insurance contracts in several states and fraud and abuse safeguards.

Med ed cuts threaten U.S. leadership in medicine

Federal budget cuts in medical education subsidy programs could have a devastating effect on the future of the healthcare industry. Physicians are concerned that educational spending cuts will impact medical technology and decrease US leadership in global healthcare. Research funds, which attract and retain skilled faculty, may be in jeopardy if the federal cuts are approved.
