Global gene expression analysis of the living human fetus using cell-free messenger RNA in amniotic fluid
Article Abstract:
A pilot study was conducted to determine whether cell-free fetal messenger RNA (mRNA) in amniotic fluid could be detected using oligonucleotide microarrays to study large-scale gene expression in living human fetuses. The study demonstrated that cell-free fetal mRNA could be extracted from amnioticfluid and successfully hybridized to gene expression microarrays.

Fetomaternal cell trafficking and the stem cell debate: Gender matters
Article Abstract:
The issues related to benefits and limitations of two cell types, adult stem cells derived from mature tissue vs. embryonic stem cells derived from human blastocysts, are discussed. The reports suggest that though embryonic stems have key advantage of pluripotency, they also form tumors in vivo, whereas the adult stem cells are found to have low plasticity.

Transfer of fetal cells with multilineage potential to maternal tissue
Article Abstract:
Fetal cells enter the maternal circulation during all pregnancies and can stay in blood for years creating a state of physiologic microchimerism in the women. The detection of such microchimeric cells indicates that presence of fetal cells may have multilineage capacity.
