Glucose control in type 2 diabetes mellitus
Article Abstract:
Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus may reduce their risk of complications by meticulous control of their blood glucose levels. The Diabetes Control and Complications Trial showed that strict management of glucose levels in patients with type 1 diabetes significantly decreased the incidence and severity of eye disease and blindness, kidney disease, and neurological complications associated with microvascular disease. Although no comprehensive clinical studies have evaluated this effect in type 2 diabetic patients, simulation models strongly suggest tight glycemic control may benefit patients with either form of this disease.

Two cases of severe clinical and histologic hepatotoxicity associated with troglitazone
Article Abstract:
Troglitazone may cause liver toxicity in some patients taking a normal dose of the diabetes medication. Doctors report two patients who developed liver dysfunction and liver tissue damage after 35 and 138 days of troglitazone treatment, possibly a reaction to byproducts produced as the medication is metabolized. The manufacturer of the drug now recommends regular liver function tests in patients taking troglitazone.
