Government health spending soars
Article Abstract:
Government health spending on Medicaid and Medicare has increased at more than twice the rate of inflation, while the private health care sector has succeeded in holding down costs through managed care initiatives. Private payers have reduced their annual spending growth from 11.1% in 1990 to a projected 7.7% in 1993, while Medicaid funding increased 30.6% in 1991. At the same time, Medicaid utilization has increased because there is little utilization review and some physicians try to compensate for low reimbursement rates by ordering more procedures.

Entitlements curbed to balance budget
Article Abstract:
Senate and House conferees, attempting to reconcile the two houses' versions of Congress' 1996 budget resolutions, have agreed to seek Medicaid and Medicare savings of over $450 billion over seven years. The savings would result in Medicare spending increases of about 6% a year and Medicaid increases of about 5% a year. The Republican-backed budget plan is intended to balance the federal budget over that time.
