Graying of the immune system: can nutrient supplements improve immunity in the elderly?
Article Abstract:
It may be beneficial for all elderly people to take a multi-vitamin-mineral supplement. Many elderly people are deficient in one or more nutrients because of poor diet or existing chronic diseases that affect appetite. This can affect their immune system, including a decreased delayed hypersensitivity and reduced response to vaccines. A 1997 study found that vitamin E supplements could increase the immune response to certain vaccines in a group of elderly people. Most vitamins are not toxic and are relatively inexpensive.

Immune Restoration With Antiretroviral Therapies: Implications for Clinical Management
Article Abstract:
The introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has suppressed viral reproduction to such an extent in some HIV patients that their immune system begins to recover. However, in most cases the recovery is only partial. Studies have shown that even a partial immune recovery can lower the risk of opportunistic infections. Some patients can even stop taking drugs that prevent opportunistic infections. However, the long-term health effects of a partial immune recovery are not known.

Recovery of the Immune System With Antiretroviral Therapy, Part 4
Article Abstract:
Antiretroviral drug therapy can effectively recover some of the immune damage caused by HIV infection. Antiretroviral medications produce a rise in the blood levels of CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells and a decrease in viral load. Although complete immune system recovery has not been demonstrated, effective antiviral treatment substantially reduces the risk of the opportunistic infections which define the progression of HIV infection to AIDS.
