Gastrointestinal bleeding
Article Abstract:
Bleeding which comes from above the duodenum is called a haemorrhage. Patients will vomit blood or pass black, foul smelling stools. Severe bleeds have a mortality rate of between 30-50% and patients are likely to have another bleed. Vomiting may cause a Mallory-Weiss tear, especially if they have drunk a lot of alcohol. A history should be taken to assess the likely cause of the bleed and it is important to measure blood pressure and the pulse. Treatments can include injection sclerotherapy, balloon tamponade and drug therapy and heat therapy.
