Guidelines and protocols: a chance to take the lead
Article Abstract:
Involvement in the development of protocols and guidelines provides nurses with a way of strengthening their position while positively influencing patient care. Guidelines help practitioners to make decisions about the appropriateness of health care in specific clinical circumstances while protocols outline care processes within a precise and detailed plan and are generally developed for a specific health related group. Nurses' continuous presence with patients places them in an ideal position to lead the development of protocols, which, like guidelines, should incorporate the user's perspective.

Thoroughly modern leaders
Article Abstract:
A Royal College of Nursing research project investigated the skills required for effective leadership in nursing. The researchers concluded that nursing leaders should have three groups of skills. They should possess the skills to influence health policy as well as nursing practice, they should be able to communicate effectively in the two different communication patterns used in the management and nursing environments, and they should be able to recognize trends and concerns from outside the nursing world and incorporate these into strategy development.

Community care services: The future framework
Article Abstract:
Nurses will have a say in commissioning and developing services for the local community from April 1999. Local commissioning schemes will each be unique, developing in response to its own population's health needs, although there will be key principles. Primary care groups (PCGs) will act as a focus for developing primary care services, typically serving populations of around 100,000. Nurses will be involved in identifying the healthcare needs of the local community, and in forming local strategic health plans.
