Gut-level decisions in peace and war
Article Abstract:
The gut has complex interactions with beneficial colonizing microorganisms, which mostly reside in the distal portion of the intestine, and these microbes facilitate the metabolism of nutrients and the development of the mucosal immune system. Two studies suggest that the intimate interplay between the mucosal microenvironment and immune cells regulates the induction of inflammatory responses and immunity to intestinal bacteria.

Osteoclast differentiation and activation
Article Abstract:
A study of osteoclast that is providing the molecular basis for developing therapeutics to treat osteoporosis and other diseases of bone loss are discussed. How diverse physiological and pathophysiological signals exert their effects on the RANK signaling pathway to induce osteoclastogenesis, bone resorption and skeletal remodeling, and so control bone mass is discussed.

Arming the osteoclast
Article Abstract:
Signaling through costimulatory receptors occurs in cells of the immune system. However, the distinction between immune cells and osteoclasts, bone resorbing cells is beginning to blur, as osteoclasts need costimulatory signals too.
