HIV-1 infection initiates an inflammatory cascade in human renal tubular epithelial cells
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to identify differentially expressed genes in renal tubular epithelial cells from a patient with HIV-associated nephropathy (HIVAN) at three time points after infection with vesicular stomatitis virus-pseudotyped gag/poldeleted HIV-1 by using oligonucleotide microarrays. Results provided novel insights into the mechanisms by which HIV-1 infection of tubular epithelial cells leads to tubulointerstitial inflammation and progressive renal injury.

Cytokine and Chemokine gene polymorphisms among ethnically diverse North Americans with HIV-1 infection
Article Abstract:
Twenty-four common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 10 cytokine and chemokine genes were reported in 579 North Americans at high risk of HIV-1 infection due to sexual behavior and injection drug use. The study reveals that heritable IL4 and IL10 variations may contribute to the acquisition or progression of HIV infection and that the effects of other targeted loci in the cytokine and chemokine system cannot be established clearly in the study populations.

Immune activation and oxidative damage in HIV-positive and HIV-negative adolescents
Article Abstract:
The associations between HIV status, disease severity, immune activation and oxidative damage was examined in a cross-sectional study involving subjects from the Reaching for Excellence in Adolescent Health cohort. Subjects (265 HIV-positive and 127 HIV-negative) were young (range:14-23 years of age) and primarily female (75%) and black (67%).
