Determination of Nicotine, pH, and Moisture Content of Six US Commercial Moist Snuff Productsu Florida, January-February 1999
Article Abstract:
The nicotine content of smokeless tobacco varies considerably from one brand to another. Researchers bought six different brands of smokeless tobacco and analyzed them for moisture content, pH, and nicotine content. The average nicotine content varied from 7.11 milligrams per gram (mg/g) of tobacco to 11.04 mg/g. The exception was a brand called Hawken Wintergreen, which had an average nicotine content of 337 mg/g. Smokeless tobacco users who dip or chew 8 to 10 times a day might be exposed to the same amount of nicotine as people who smoke 30 to 40 cigarettes a day.

Reducing Ongoing Transmission of Tuberculosis
Article Abstract:
Tuberculosis continues to spread despite programs such as directly observed therapy, or DOT, and other measures to control the disease. Many patients do not receive DOT and these patients may not receive the best care. The best way to deal with the epidemic is to identify high-risk patients as well as sites where tuberculosis is transmitted. Homeless shelters in particular might benefit from disinfectants. Programs need to reach out to the socially disadvantaged, who often delay medical care.
