Infection and allergy incidence in ambulatory surgery patients using white petrolatum vs bacitracin ointment: a randomized controlled trial
Article Abstract:
White petrolatum appears to be almost as effective in preventing postoperative wound infection as bacitracin ointments. Researchers randomly allocated 884 postoperative patients to receive white petrolatum on their wounds or an ointment containing the antibiotic bacitracin. Although twice as many patients receiving white petrolatum developed wound infections, the wounds in both groups healed at essentially the same rate. In addition, none of the patients receiving white petrolatum developed contact dermatitis, whereas 4 patients who received bacitracin ointment did.

Effect of St John's wort on drug metabolism by induction of cytochrome P450 3A4 enzyme
Article Abstract:
The herb St. John's wort may affect the metabolism of many drugs, according to a detailed study of 12 people. Researchers measured the activity of two enzymes that metabolize drugs while the volunteers took St. John's wort. The herb affected an enzyme called cytochrome P450 3A4, causing it to metabolize alprazolam much faster than normal. This is important because St. John's wort and alprazolam are both used to treat depression. Doctors may have to use a bigger dose of alprazolam in patients who also take St. John's wort.
