HMO executives claim fat paychecks
Article Abstract:
High executive salaries at health maintenance organizations may be partly responsible for why health insurance premiums remain so high in an era of aggressive cost-cutting in the healthcare industry. A Crystal Report newsletter study found that seven of the CEOs at the 12 publically owned managed care providers were compensated more than $1 million each in 1994. Healthsource CEO Norman C. Payson is reportedly the highest paid, with $14.28 million in compensation during the year.

HMOs see steady growth, some market shifts
Article Abstract:
Enrollment in health maintenance organizations (HMOs), which is expected to double in the ten years ending Dec 31, 1997, will probably include 25% of Americans. In the year ended Jul 1, 1994, membership grew 11.5% and included 47.3 million persons. Some states, especially Minnesota and the Northeast, reported a loss of members. Plans with open-end options experienced more growth than those offering less selection.

Can managed care offer effective smoking cessation?
Article Abstract:
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation will grant up to $5.36 million to health maintenance organizations to evaluate smoking cessation programs. University of Wisconsin-Madison's Michael C. Fiore noted the paradox of insurance plans providing coverage for smoking-related diseases, while not covering smoking-cessation programs. About half of health insurance plans do not cover smoking cessation.
