Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome: epidemiology, prevention, and case presentation of a new viral strain
Article Abstract:
A new strain of hantavirus may cause life-threatening respiratory distress. Transmitted by inhaling airborne particles of rodent saliva or excreta, the strain appeared in 1993 and half of reported cases have died. Prodromal symptoms resemble those of influenza, gastrointestinal infection, or pneumonia. However, they are followed by rapid, acute respiratory distress. Thrombocytopenia should raise suspicion. Treatment includes intubation, ventilation, electrolyte management, pressor and cardiotonic drugs. The value of intravenous ribavarin is not known.

The Unna's boot as a treatment for venous ulcers
Article Abstract:
Research appears to be inconclusive about the benefits of using the Unna's boot over other compression options when treating patients with leg ulcers. The Unna's boot is a medicated and compressed dressing applied to the lower leg of affected patients. An overview of leg ulcer development, rationales for and effectiveness of various treatments, and methods of Unna's boot application are presented. Patients should be instructed in compression dressing care.
