Investigation of nurse practitioner-patient interactions: using the Nurse Practitioner Rating Form
Article Abstract:
The Nurse Practitioner Rating Form (NPRF) may be a useful tool in evaluating interactions between nurse practitioners (NPs) and patients. Investigators videotaped NP-patient encounters and collected data with the NPRF to determine the validity of this evaluation technique. The study examined primary care visits of a mainly Hispanic patient group, and demonstrated that NPs used on average 61% of appointment time on assessment, 29% on management and 10% on charting, consultation and other activities. However, the NPRF does not measure how NPs offer comfort and use interpersonal communication to develop trust, show empathy and promote patient self-esteem.

Using nurse practitioner certification for state nursing regulation: an update
Article Abstract:
Nurse practitioner certification remains a state-level issue, even if national standards are established. Although several certification programs' exams have been described as not geared for entry level, states may desire to tie certification to entry-level skills. The National Commission of Certifying Agencies' report on various nurse practitioner examinations will have some bearing on the use of exams for certification. The National Council's actions and position on this issue from 1992 through 1996 is also discussed.

Promoting the nurse practitioner by using a marketing approach
Article Abstract:
Nurse practitioners must carefully market their services if they wish to compete effectively in the modern job arena. Nurses should inform the public of their wide range of medical services, the lower costs of health care they offer, and their convenient locations if applicable. Promoting their services in the media or through letters can enhance nurse practitioners' visibility to the public.
