Health is our business
Article Abstract:
The managers of the UK National Health Service (NHS) are gradually introducing health and safety management into general management procedures. It has been suggested illness and health and safety accidents to staff cost the NHS around 12 million pounds sterling, in 1995. Management of health and safety must be uncomplicated and thorough in order to cover the large number of staff. Some areas of risk are covered by special policies, such as working with hazardous substances. The potential risk of violence to health care professionals is also being assessed to reduce the number of incidents.

HSW and performance appraisals
Article Abstract:
It is possible to argue that the performance of managers in relation to workplace health and safety should be subject to upward appraisal by all subordinates who directly report to these managers. However, it is important to be aware that there is still little firm evidence about how upward appraisal arrangements work in practice and that the common tendency for appraisers to avoid extremes of criticism or praise could be even more prevalent in upward appraisal.
