Health promotion in general practice: has the 1996 GP contract inspired or hindered effective health promotion by GPs in Nottingham?
Article Abstract:
Researchers investigated the health promotional activities undertaken by randomly-selected general practices within the Nottingham Health Authority, England. The investigation followed the introduction of a GP-contract health promotion scheme in Oct 1997. The local Health Promotion Committee had approved all proposals submitted by general practices. Questionnaire responses revealed a range of health promotional activities but little accompanying evaluation. The researchers concluded that general practices need more guidance on evaluation techniques and encouragement to implement them.

Points of view: where are health promotion services going?; a practical role for health service health promotion agencies?
Article Abstract:
The value and role of health promotion activities are being increasingly scrutinised as the government's new policy, 'The Health of the Nation', is introduced. The efficacy of health promotion activities should be studied more carefully. Health promotion is generally part of health service contracting, with providers and purchasers keen to know what is available and at what cost. Health promotion agencies can be stronger by joining forces with other agencies, and they are required to be sensitive about initiating health promotion programmes in the workplace.
