Hemolytic disease of the newborn: progenitor cells and late effects
Article Abstract:
Hemolytic disease of the newborn still occurs despite preventive measures used to mismatches of the Rh blood group system. Other antigens on red blood cells can also cause the mother to form antibodies against her fetus. The antibodies then travel across the placenta and attack fetal red blood cells, causing anemia. One of these antigens is the Kell group, predominantly the K1 antigen. Parents can have blood tests to determine if the fetus is at risk of anemia, which can lead to heart failure, growth retardation and even death. Transfusions are the best treatment, both before and after birth.

Transfusions of polymerized bovine hemoglobin in a patient with severe autoimmune hemolytic anemia
Article Abstract:
Doctors report the first case of a patient with autoimmune hemolytic anemia who was treated with polymerized bovine hemoglobin. Autoimmune hemolytic anemia is a form of anemia caused by an autoimmune reaction against red blood cells. The 21-year-old woman did not respond to traditional treatments, including blood transfusions, corticosteroids, plasmapheresis, immune globulin, or removal of the spleen. She was successfully treated with Hemopure, a polymerized bovine hemoglobin.
