Older people's views of continuing care
Article Abstract:
A small study investigated the value placed on nursing by elderly people in continuing care settings. The study, which was conducted by means of individual and group interviews, established that old people consider the nurse-patient relationship to be of supreme importance and that they value cheerfulness, sociability and a sense of humour in a nurse. The elderly people valued the knowledge and competence of expert nurses, as well as their compassion and kindness, and they felt that expert care gave them a sense of self-esteem. Recommendations for further study are included.

Lessons from the experience of using a video camera for research
Article Abstract:
A number of factors determine the success of collecting video data to study nurse-patient communication. These include ease of access on a regular basis to the environment in which the filming is to take place, the need to depend on others for information about the timing of the event to be filmed and ease of access to a camera and other equipment. Data collection and analysis must take account of the role of the researcher as a participant observer.

Nurse to patient ratios and patient outcomes
Article Abstract:
A study into the possible link between patient mortality and re-admission in to hospital compared with staff nursing ratios (NPRs) found no significant link when all types of hospitals were assessed, although there appeared to be a small rise in hospital re-admissions in teaching hospitals. Patient outcomes could be improved if NPRs data was more widely used in hospitals as a management tool.
