Heparin levels to guide thromboembolism prophylaxis during pregnancy
Article Abstract:
Pregnant women with a history of thrombosis may need a higher dose of the anti-coagulant heparin than is usually given. Researchers adjusted the dose of 14 women placed on heparin throughout the second and third trimester until the women had blood heparin levels that were comparable to those of a control group of people receiving heparin following surgery or prolonged bed rest. The standard heparin dose of 5,000 units every 12 hours did not produce adequate blood levels in any of the women. Adequate levels were not achieved in five of nine women given 7,500 units every 12 hours during the second trimester or in six of 13 given 10,000 units every 12 hours in the third trimester. One of the women required 20,000 units every 12 hours, which placed her at the lower limit of adequate anticoagulation. None of the women had a thrombolic event and all delivered healthy babies.

Comparison of protein S functional and antigenic assays in normal pregnancy
Article Abstract:
It may be more appropriate to use an immune system based test than a functional test when screening for protein S deficiencies during pregnancy. Protein S is a protein that inhibits blood clotting. Thirty-seven women with normal pregnancies were screened for protein S deficiencies using an immune system based and functional test. Using the functional test, all 10 women in the last trimester tested below the normal range for protein S. Using the immune system based test, however, only three women tested below the normal range for protein S.
