Hop on board AMA tort reform express
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association (AMA) is lobbying for reform of health care with laws that encompass limited tort liability of physicians. There are presently 14 bills in Congress that seek to include tort reform in health care legislation, because of excessive insurance premiums and damage to the physician-patient relationship. Other organizations that join the AMA in backing this legislation include the National Association of Manufacturers, the Washington Business Group on Health, the American Tort Reform Association, and the American Hospital Association.

FTC compromise clears Senate panel
Article Abstract:
After several months of negotiations between the AMA and the FTC, a compromise amendment has passed the Senate Commerce Committee. This would prohibit the FTC from making rules or conditions that pre-empt state laws establishing requirements for medical personnel. Both medical and legal associations have objected to being considered subject to antitrust law.
