Hospital emergency preparedness -- lessons learned since Northridge
Article Abstract:
The state of New York has developed a statewide system known as the Hospital Emergency Response Data System and similar systems are being developed in other states. This system was created to facilitate the exchange of information between hospitals during an emergency, including the number of available hospital beds, personnel, vehicles, equipment and supplies. This information can be used to transfer patients to another hospital if necessary, as happened in Los Angeles County after the Northridge earthquake of 1994.
