Hospitals binge on practice buy-outs
Article Abstract:
The rapid approach of health care reforms has physicians worried about their private practices, and many of them are selling to hospitals for the security of stable employment. Hospitals are worried about not having the necessary services available, and they are buying as many private practices as they can afford, to ensure adequate staffing. Many doctors believe this trend may eliminate private practices altogether, but younger doctors seem ready to embrace the security and benefits that a hospital system can provide.

Are PHOs ready to cope with managed care?
Article Abstract:
Physicians are joining physician-hospital organizations (PHO) is record numbers, but many PHOs are not structured to handle managed care contracts efficiently, according to a study by Ernst & Young. Health care providers are forming PHOs to provide better quality, to improve physician-hospital relationships and to share risks. However, many PHOs do not have adequate administrative support to track patient care and control costs under capitation contracts.

PHOs: friends or foes?
Article Abstract:
Physician-hospital organizations (PHOs) are emerging as an important type of health care delivery system. Techniques for structuring a PHO and organizing the physicians within one are discussed. For example, the board and capital should be half supplied by the hospital and half by physicians. In addition, difficult issues that may derail such an organization, such as physician mix, are also presented.
