Host defense against Pseudomonas aeruginosa requires ceramide-rich membrane rafts

Article Abstract:

Results point out that ceramide-enriched membrane systems are the key for the host defense against Pseudomonas aeruginosa in that failure to generate such membrane systems in infected cells leads to unchecked inflammatory response and massive release of interleukin-1. Data indicate that P.aeriginosa triggers activation of the acid sphingomyelinase and the release of ceramide-rich membrane rafts.

This review discusses the etiology and therapeutic treatment of sepsis, a complex clinical syndrome resulting from a harmful or dmaging host response to infection, with respect to bacterial-host interactions and the dysregulation of the host response.
