House approves overhaul; coordination strategy, specialty ballot get nod
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association's (AMA) House of Delegates approved at its 1996 annual meeting a major overhaul of its bylaws that is intended to make the organization more inclusive and efficient. The changes include the addition of many more specialty-society delegates, and a statement of collaborative intent that urges individual groups to support AMA House policy so that the organization can present a more unified voice. The changes are part of a reaction to growing complaints about the policies and usefulness of medical societies in general and the AMA in particular.

NCQA courts doctors with practicing physicians panel
Article Abstract:
The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) has appointed 19 members to its new Practicing Physicians Advisory Council. The NCQA formed the council in response to criticisms that its policies, especially a provision that created duplicative office reviews, were anti-physician. The committee held its first meeting in Sep. 1996. It will meet quarterly to identify potential areas for improvement in managed care, and to provide a bridge between the NCQA and physicians.
