Housing subsidies and pediatric undernutrition
Article Abstract:
Lack of subsidized housing may contribute to malnutrition in poor children. When housing is not subsidized, costs may take so much of the family's budget that there is insufficient to purchase adequate amounts of food even with the help of food subsidy programs. Researchers calculated deviation from the expected average in weight for age, weight for height, and height for age in 203 children aged three or younger from low income families. Outcomes were compared between children living in subsidized housing and children whose families were on waiting lists. Children from families on waiting lists averaged less weight for age and weight for height than children in subsidized housing. Only 3% of children in subsidized housing were below the fifth percentile for height for age, the tenth percentile for weight for height, or both compared with 22% of children whose families were on the waiting list.

Introduction of a Recorded Health Information Line Into a Pediatric Practice
Article Abstract:
A series of pre-recorded phone messages on various topics may be very helpful to parents. Pediatricians in a Denver., CO suburban practice mailed information about a phone service called Parent Advice Line (PAL) containing 278 recorded health-related messages to their patients' families. According to a follow-up survey, one-third of the families used the phone service. Sixty percent of PAL calls were made during office hours, 21% were made from 5 PM to 9 PM, and 8% were made after midnight. The use of PAL eliminated the need to visit the doctor between 60% to 70% of the time.
