A major credit for this goes to Charles D. Kelman, who has received considerable recognition for his legendary contributions to medicine, including every major award in fields of ophthalmology and cataract surgery.

The year 2005 marks the sixtieth anniversary of the Lasker Awards, presented annually by the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation. Each year, one award, the Basic Award honors fundamental discoveries that open new fields of biology, and a separate award, the Clinical Award honors pioneering achievements that change the practice of clinical medicine.
