How people change: physicians may miss the mark in counseling patients if they don't understand this complex process
Article Abstract:
Changing risky or unhealthy behaviors is a long and complex process, and physicians who understand the process of change can better help their patients. Most behavioral change involves six stages, according to James O. Prochaska: denial of the problem or blaming others, recognition, making plans, actual attempts to change, maintaining healthy behaviors, and terminating the change. Physicians can help patients by educating them about their problem, offering specific techniques for coping with difficulties, and encouraging them not to give up on their efforts to change.

Physicians slow to update treatment plans
Article Abstract:
Experts participating in a New Jersey symposium said that doctors do not always change their treatment plans when clinical trial findings that would warrant such changes are reported. The reasons cited for this situation include the large amount of information reported, low receptivity among physicians, and patient-related factors. Information on the sources of treatment data is included.
