How we got here: evolution of the physician crisis
Article Abstract:
The physician supply crisis of the early 1990s is influenced by several historical factors. In 1900, there was a physician glut, with little regulation or accreditation. By 1925, the number of physicians had dropped by 36%, and tuition-supported medical schools became professionalized and accredited. By the 1960s, there was an increasing demand for more physicians due to the baby boom and Medicaid and Medicare. Forty new medical schools were built, and the total number of physicians doubled between 1963 and 1993 to 615,000. Medical school output is still influenced by decisions made in the early 1960s.

Are there too many doctors? And too many specialists?
Article Abstract:
Many experts believe that the US has too many specialists and not enough primary care doctors. Many feel that as health care access is expanded to more individuals, that more primary care doctors will be needed. Several methods for increasing the number of primary care physicians are being considered, such as forgiving student loans or changing admissions policies for medical students who agree to become primary care doctors. Increased use of physician assistants may also stretch primary care resources in the US.

Crash course in advocacy
Article Abstract:
Russian physicians are struggling to establish new medical associations amid the severe economic and political crisis facing the nation. Double-digit declines in gross domestic product and triple-digit inflation have made resources for health care nearly nonexistent. The Russian Medical Association is primarily research-based, while the Physicians Association of Russia draws its membership from the local and population-based health system.
