Empowering Patients to Monitor and Manage Oral Anticoagulation Therapy
Article Abstract:
Many patients who take anticoagulant drugs may be able to take a more active role in their care. Anticoagulant drugs prevent blood clotting but high doses can cause bleeding. Consequently, the dose must be carefully monitored. A 1999 study found that patients who were taught to take their own PT-INR measurements and adjust the dose of drug accordingly benefitted from this self-management model. Small instruments can be used to analyze fingerstick blood samples for the PT-INR value, which is a measurement of how long it takes blood to clot. Other studies have confirmed the value of the self-managment model.

Derivation and validation of a simplified predictive index for renal replacement therapy after cardiac surgery
Article Abstract:
Preoperative information is used for developing a predictive index for renal replacement therapy (RRT) after cardiac surgery. The results show that a simple predictive index based on this information has discriminated well between low- and high-risk patients in derivation and validation cohorts and it has improved generalizability when used to predict likelihood ratios for RRT.
