Article Abstract:
The UK government has indicated its awareness of the need to encourage family-friendly employment practices. Initiatives in this area have included an 'Improved Working Lives' toolkit. However, it is clear that family-friendly employment practices are still not operating effectively in many professions. In nursing, some senior staff regard those who want to work flexible or reduced hours as not being fully committed to their job. It is now time for senior political leaders to act as an example in showing that family life must be given a higher priority.
