Immunohistochemical localization of phospholipase A2 isoforms in human myometrium during pregnancy and parturition
Article Abstract:
Changes in phospholipase A2 activity in uterine muscle may not be related to labor. Researchers obtained uterine muscle from cesarean section deliveries at term and before term in five women who were and five women who were not in labor. Immunostaining techniques were used to identify phospholipase A2 in muscle tissue. Two different types of phospholipase A2, secretory and cytosolic, were found in uterine muscle but in different places. Each type may have a unique function. No change in expression of phospholipase A2 was observed from pregnancy to labor. Phospholipase A2 influences arachidonic acid activity.

Expression of prostaglandin H synthase isoforms in human myometrium at parturition
Article Abstract:
There appears to be a shift in favor of prostaglandin H synthase-1 formation during labor. This enzyme regulates the production of prostaglandins, which contract the uterus. The enzyme occurs in two forms: prostaglandin H synthase-1 and prostaglandin H synthase-2. Researchers analyzed uterine tissue from 14 pregnant women who had a cesarean at term or prematurely. Both forms were present in the samples, but levels of prostaglandin H synthase-1 increased during labor.

Expression and regulation of the messenger ribonucleic acid encoding the prostaglandin F (sub 2alpha) receptor in the rat myometrium during pregnancy and labor
Article Abstract:
Levels of prostaglandin F (sub 2alpha) receptor messenger RNA in uterine tissue increase as pregnancy progresses to labor and this increase is blocked by progesterone. Prostaglandin F (sub 2alpha) stimulates uterine contractions.
