Implementation of clinical guidelines using a computer charting system: effect on the initial care of health care workers exposed to body fluids
Article Abstract:
Embedding clinical guidelines in the computerized medical record can enhance the implementation of the guidelines. These guidelines are developed to improve the quality of health care and hopefully save money in the process. Researchers at one hospital emergency department programmed the clinical guidelines for managing 280 health care workers exposed to body fluids into the medical records system. The system prompts the physician at each step, ensuring that the guidelines are followed. This successfully improved implementation of the guidelines and reduced the costs associated with the care of these workers.

High-Dose Chemotherapy and Breast Cancer
Article Abstract:
Several large clinical trials should determine which breast cancer patients might benefit from specific treatments. One such treatment is aggressive chemotherapy followed by stem cell transplant. Stem cells are precursors of the immune system and the transplant is necessary because chemotherapy destroys the immune system. A 1999 study found that not all breast cancer patients benefit from this treatment. Women who already had a poor prognosis did not benefit from the treatment.
