Increased prevalence of symptomatic macrovascular disease in systemic sclerosis
Article Abstract:
The prevalence of painful limping or lameness symptoms in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) may be more common than previously reported. Researchers polled 46 patients with Ssc in either their limbs or internal organs about the presence of pain on walking and compared this data with a previously reported study. They obtained additional information about relevant risk factors from the patients' medical records. Of these 46 patients, 10 (21.7%) reported pain on walking compared to 4.6% in the other study. Additional risk factors included smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, and stroke. There were twice as many Ssc patients with pain on walking who smoked as compared to the Ssc patients with no pain on walking. Of the patients with pain on walking, 70% had a history of heart disease as compared to 19.4% of those with no pain on walking.

Intra-articular primatised anti-CD4: efficacy in resistant rehumatoid knees. A study of combined arthroscopy, magnetic resonance imaging, and histology
Article Abstract:
The anti-CD4 monoclonal antibody known as SB-210396/CE 9.1 seems to be safe and effective in relieving symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) when injected into the knee joint. Of 13 patients with synovitis and treated randomly, 12 finished the test. There was no improvement in either of the two patients who received an inactive test injection, but all 10 of the 10 who received the anti-CD4 showed arthroscopic improvement. The method of Region of Interest (ROI) mapping also proved successful in examining the results.
