Rheumatological manifestations of haematological diseases
Article Abstract:
There may be a link between blood diseases and joint diseases. Researchers highlighted the correlations between blood disorders including those affecting red and white blood cells, clotting, and iron absorption and the incidence of joint diseases in patients with these blood disorders. Nearly half (45%) of the patients with sickle cell anemia have joint inflammation and damage in their fingers and toes, in many cases, serious enough to warrant surgical replacement. Drugs used to treat thalassemia may stimulate the development of joint diseases in patients with this disorder. Joint pain and disease are common in children with leukemia and physicians may initially misdiagnose children with leukemia as having juvenile arthritis. Nearly all (90%) of the patients with severe cases of hemophilia also have joint disease. There seems to be a significant risk associated with autoimmune joint diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren's syndrome, and lupus, and the development of lymph cancers.

An overview of rheumatological research in the European Union
Article Abstract:
Rheumatologists in the European Union (EU) are making significant contributions to research in joint diseases. Researchers reviewed scientific papers published in 17 journals in 1995 and concluded that 57% came from rheumatologists in EU countries and 23% came from the US. Rheumatology researchers used 8,331 technical words in research papers, and only 25% were used more than twice. Editors should attempt to standardize medical terms to improve the accuracy of bibliographic searching.

Ro/SSA and La/SSB specific IgA autoantibodies in serum of patients with Sjogren's syndrome and systemic lupus erythematosus
Article Abstract:
The authors present the results of their investigation into measurement of the quantity of autoantibodies to immunoglobulin A which occur in the blood of patients with Sjogren's syndrom A or B (SSA, SSB). The data they present can be used to further investigate the autoantibodies' function in inflammation, and to determine if they present any diagnostic use.
