Indemnity insurance reinvents itself, finds niche markets

Pure indemnity insurance may be a thing of the past, but indemnity insurance that includes managed-care tools such as utilization review and prehospitalization authorization will probably survive in niche markets, according to health insurance experts. Fortis Health president Tom Keller believes that the future for such products is bright, despite the fact that employers are rapidly abandoning traditional indemnity plans.

Ruling creates hurdle for merger of N.J. Blue Cross, Anthem
Article Abstract:
A New Jersey court has ruled that Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey Inc. is a charitable organization. The Mar 24, 1997, ruling will hurt New Jersey Blue's planned merger with Anthem Inc., a for-profit corporation, because it means that New Jersey Blue may be required to pay part of its assets to the state before it can proceed with the planned merger. New Jersey Blue will appeal the ruling.

Gearing up for Medicare expansions: provider-sponsored HMOs bolstered by new Humana group

MedStep, a newly launched subsidiary of Humana Health Plans Inc., will offer provider-sponsored organizations assistance in developing and managing Medicare health maintenance organizations. The provider-sponsored groups will in return offer MedStep a percentage of the Medicare capitation fees paid to the groups by the federal government.
