AMA: science must be key in off-label drug information
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association (AMA) has endorsed a bill regulating the prescribing of prescription pharmaceuticals for non-labelled uses crafted by Sen William Frist and Sen Connie Mack. The bill, which has bipartisan support, creates safeguards and ensures that drug makers disseminate the proper scientific data to physicians to enable physicians to make informed prescription choices. The AMA had discovered that many physicians' off-label prescription decisions were unduly influenced by drug makers' commercial marketing efforts.

Kids' insurance: have goal, funds; now asking 'how?'(congressional efforts to expand children's access to health care)
Article Abstract:
The congressional budget resolution has allocated $16 billion from 1998 to 2003 to expand children's access to health care, but legislators are still working on legislation to implement the bipartisan goal. Two initiatives are on the table, and proposals expanding Medicaid coverage are expected. The budget resolution strives to cover 3.7-million to 5-million uninsured children, but any attempt to do this will likely result in cuts in other resources.

Article Abstract:
Some low-income children may lose Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid coverage under new regulations released by the Social Security Administration. About 135,000 children are expected to be affected by the changes.
