Infection by different HIV-1 subtypes (B and C) results in a similar immune activation profile despite distinct immune backgrounds
Article Abstract:
HIV infection may progress in a similar manner even though some patients are infected with different strains of the virus. This was confirmed by a study of Israelis and Ethiopians who were infected with HIV subtypes B or C. Both viral subtypes had a similar effect on the immune system.

Immune activation correlates better than HIV plasma viral load with CD4 T-cell decline during HIV infection
Article Abstract:
Activation of T cells without proliferation appears to be the major cause of CD4 T cell decreases during HIV infection. In a study of 54 HIV patients, about half of the Ki-67+CD4+ T cells were also positive for a marker of activated non-proliferating cells.

In vitro effects of recombinant TNF-alpha binding protein (rTBP-1) on hematopoiesis of HIV-infected patients
Article Abstract:
A soluble form of the receptor for tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) may boost the production of blood cells in HIV patients. The soluble form of the receptor binds TNF-alpha, which basically inhibits it.
