Influenza: immunization/prophylaxis for children, adults, and older adults
Article Abstract:
Influenza continues to cause significant illness and death, particularly among the elderly. Vaccination is 50% to 60% effective at preventing pneumonia and hospitalization from influenza in older adults, so major health authorities recommend annual immunization of those over age 65. Vaccination is also recommended for children and adults at increased risk of infection, health care workers, and caretakers of at-risk people. Antiviral drugs may be used to prevent influenza in people not yet vaccinated, immunocompromised patients, and those who cannot receive the vaccination.

Pneumococcus (including childhood immunization) immunization/prophylaxis: recommendations for adults/older adults
Article Abstract:
The pneumococcal vaccine, for prevention of Streptococcus pneumoniae infections, is effective but underused. Persons at increased risk for pneumococcal disease include older adults; adults and children with chronic heart and lung conditions, diabetes or alcoholism; HIV patients and other immunocompromised patients; and institutionalized adults. Major medical authorities have differing recommendations, but most agree that immunocompetent persons 65 and older should be vaccinated, as well as others at high risk.
