Serum ferritin and cardiovascular risk - ab ovo?
Article Abstract:
Jerome L. Sullivan correctly points out that the interpretation of data relating to serum ferritin and accepted risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease (CAD) is incomplete. However, the interpretation was intended to cast doubt on the hypothesized link between serum ferritin and CAD, because of confounding with established risk factors. More evidence supports the established risk factors than high levels of stored iron as a risk factor for CAD. High serum ferritin seems more likely to indicate general stress. Patients with iron-overload do not have higher rates of CAD.

Serum ferritin, desferrioxamine, and evolution of HIV-1 infection in thalassemic patients
Article Abstract:
Iron overload may promote the progression of HIV infection and AIDS. Excessive iron in the body may promote oxidation and impair the immune system. Researchers studied iron dynamics in 49 HIV patients with thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder, nine years after they tested positive for HIV. Thirty-one percent of patients with high serum ferritin levels, indicating substantial iron stores, progressed to stage IV infection, compared to 16% of those with lower ferritin levels. Desferrioxamine therapy slowed progression of the infection.
