The small child: anthropometric and physical performance characteristics of short-for-age children growing in good and poor socio-economic conditions
Article Abstract:
The biological differences between short statured children with high and low socio-economic status (SES) are studied. Results show that short statured children with low SES have lower body weights, shorter limbs, longer trunks, narrower shoulders, smaller arm circumferences and poorer muscular reaction times compared to short children with high SES. Genetically short children also have different anthropometric and functional traits from children who are short because of their environment.

Nutrition in early life and later outcome
Article Abstract:
The incidence of ischaemic heart disease (IHD) in adults was traced to possible links with early environment. Reduced growth in fetal and infant life as a result of an adverse environment was found to signal a predisposition to heart disease in adult life. Feeding methods also appeared to have a significant impact on serum cholesterol concentrations in adults and determined the death rates from IHD.
