Is Europe's four-day workweek hazardous to workers?
Article Abstract:
Many European business enterprises are shortening the number of working days to four per week. Firms are able to reduce their costs and provide an additional rest day with the four-day workweek scheme. The economic conditions in Europe, characterized by weak market demands and high levels of production, have contributed to the trend's popularity. Several companies have been able to minimize the number of layoffs with the shortened workweeks. However, the scheme involves more working hours per day, subjecting workers to fatigue and increasing the risk of injuries while at work or on the way home.

Ergonomics still no. 1 problem for VDT workers
Article Abstract:
A National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health research showed that stress-inducing conditions and employers' use of electronic monitoring can lead to repetitive-motion illnesses among employees using video display terminals (VDTs). Employers have tried alleviating these symptoms with fine ergonomically-designed equipment but these alone do not significantly reduce the incidence of repetitive motion illnesses. Management may need to restructure certain job aspects such as work pace and work load to get better results and ensure the health of their employees.
