Is a Nursing Shortage on the Way?
Article Abstract:
Director of the Harvard Nursing Research Institute in Boston, MA, Peter I. Buerhaus, believes the demand for nurses will continue in a society whose aging population is increasing and in which technological innovation creates more demand for medical care. He questions, however, whether there will be enough nurses to meet the demand. The nursing population is aging, and nurses traditionally reduce work hours as they reach their fifties. Young people may not be attracted to the profession because wages have fallen, particularly those working in ambulatory care. Wages may have to increase to attract nurses.

Calling All Patients
Article Abstract:
A survey on hospital patient satisfaction discloses some relevant information for health care providers. Beyond competent care, patients look for respect, emotional support, privacy, and response to their views and desires. Using such tools as the one designed to elicit this information should improve patient care quality.
