Do twins mature earlier than singletons? Results from a matched cohort study
Article Abstract:
Twins do not appear to experience more rapid lung maturation than singleton babies. Doctors commonly believe that the lungs of twins mature earlier in pregnancy, which could affect the decision to deliver the baby. Researchers compared outcomes between 112 sets of twins (224 babies) with 224 similar singleton infants all born before 35 weeks gestation. No differences were found in death rates or rates of respiratory distress syndrome, brain hemorrhage, gangrene of the intestines, or low 5-minute Apgar scores. Nearly 90% of twins versus about three-quarters of singletons were admitted to newborn intensive care units.

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and hemolytic uremic syndrome in pregnancy: review of 11 cases
Article Abstract:
Despite modern treatment, maternal and fetal death and complication rates may remain high from thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and hemolytic uremic syndrome in pregnancy. In both diseases blood clots plug small blood vessels causing kidney damage, brain damage, and fetal loss. A review of the medical records of 11 women experiencing one disease or the other between 1988 and 1996 revealed two maternal deaths, four women with chronic kidney disease, one of whom had brain damage, and seven infants born alive, all but one prematurely.
