James and Sarah
Article Abstract:
A community team was called to the house of James and Sarah, an elderly couple living in squalor. Despite visits from a community psychiatric nurse, a general practitioner and a hospital social worker, no action had been taken to help this elderly couple, and the team arranged an emergency admission to hospital for Sarah. After the house was cleaned, attention was then turned to James, who was cleaned up and encouraged to eat a healthier diet. Sadly James died after suffering a major cardiovascular accident.

A long night
Article Abstract:
A nurse narrates her experience of nursing a seriously ill patient on her first night duty. She has feelings of panic as she is left in charge of the patient and is unsure how to cope or what to say to him, but finds that just by sitting holding his hand they both draw strength from each other without the need for words.
